Written by a Teacher Who Understands

After fourteen years in the classroom, I understand that teaching is filled with moments most people never see or understand.

There are beautiful days when a student finally understands, a family expresses gratitude, or your classroom feels like the place you were created to be.

Then, there are days filled with difficult conversations, impossible expectations, hidden sacrifices, and questions about whether your work is making a difference.

This devotional includes some of my favorite classroom stories, lessons I learned the hard way, and the biblical truths that continually reminded me that God was present in my classroom.

These pages are filled with the encouragement I would share with you if we were teacher besties across the hall, catching up during planning time or sitting together after one of those especially difficult days.

Weekly Themes

This devotional contains 180 devotions, representing 180 school days. The readings are arranged into thirty-six weeks with five devotionals in each week. Of course, not every school week contains five days. There will be holidays, teacher workdays, weather closures, breaks, and the occasional three- or four-day school week. You do not need to complete five devotionals during a shortened week simply to remain aligned with the calendar. Instead, follow the number of days you are in school. Read one devotional for each school day and continue with the next numbered day when you return. This will allow the devotional to move with you through the natural flow of your school year rather than becoming another schedule you feel pressured to maintain. The weekly themes may not always align perfectly with Monday through Friday because school calendars vary. That is okay. The themes are woven through each group of five readings and will continue unfolding as you move through the devotional.

The 180 days are also divided into four larger sections that follow the progression of a school year:

Rooted for the Work helps establish your identity, dependence, and spiritual foundation at the beginning of the year.

Strength for the Middle speaks to the routines, relationships, responsibilities, and weariness that emerge as the year continues.

Grace for the Hard Days addresses burnout, disappointment, conflict, limitations, and the difficult circumstances teachers carry.

Hope for the Finish helps you remain faithful, reflect wisely, release what you cannot control, and finish the year with love and hope.
